Your distance and dimensions are going to be the major factors behind your long distance moving price. But aside from your miles and your weight (or sometimes cubic feet, depending on who you’re working with), there are some other extras and add-ons that contribute to your price:

• Packing: Full-service packing is an enticing option. Instead of dealing with all the boxes and bubble wrap yourself, your movers will take care of everything for you. Depending on the size of your house, this ranges from a couple hundred to a couple thousand.
• Access fees: Draw a line from your front door to the street. Does it go through any obstacles? If there are gates, elevators, or extra flights of stairs, your movers will charge you for the obstacle course.
• Insurance: Moving companies offer free insurance, but you get what you pay for $0.60 per pound of damaged or missing items. Think your laptop is worth more than like… $2.40? Shell out a little extra for full value coverage, and rest easy on moving day.
• Specialty moving: We’ve seen pianos, pool tables, arts, antique – heck, even vintage motorcycles and collections of anime figurines (although not in the same house). All these items need extra TLC. Custom crates, hoisting out the window, the works.
• Shuttle fees: When movers travel long distance, they use a big semi truck. But these aren’t always allowed to park on city streets. In these cases, your movers will have to park the main truck in the sticks, and use a smaller van to finish the job. Not cheap.

If you’re trying to save as much as possible, your best bet is to DIY your entire long-distance move. But don’t be too quick to rent that truck! It takes a lot of discipline to make sure you’re saving every penny. You’ll have to pay for gas, food, and lodging along the way, so map out your cheapest options on the route.

Anything under 100 miles and within the same state counts as a local move. If a move is over 100 miles or across state lines (even if the state line is just a few miles away), it counts as a long-distance move. Long-distance movers have federal licenses and certifications so they can deal with your interstate moves.

We always recommend downsizing as much as possible. If you have a bunch of stuff you don’t want, don’t need, or just don’t use anymore, you shouldn’t pay your moving company to transport all of it. Sell it, donate it, trash it, just don’t take it with you.

Aside from going all Marie Kondo, try to book smart. Peak moving season is June through August. Want to save even more money? Set your schedule in the middle of the month, the middle of the week, and far away from major holidays and vacation times.

Other moving companies like to throw around hidden fees or keep you in the dark about access fees, shuttles, and the price of packing until the last minute.

A long-distance move can take anywhere from 1 to 21 days. Want a rough minimum? Take the miles between your origin and destination, and divide it by 400. (Drivers aren’t allowed to clock more than 400 miles of interstate travel per day).

Got a small apartment? Your move may actually take LONGER. This is due to bundling, a common practice in the industry that keeps costs down.

Movers don’t like to send half-empty trucks all over the place. It’s expensive to burn all that gas for just one client. Instead, your movers will combine several moves in the same truck or trailer (while keeping everything tidy and separated of course).

This keeps costs down by ensuring your movers are really getting the most out of the route – but you may end up waiting while they deal with a few extra pickups and deliveries.
